NEW STAR TREK

A brand new Star Trek series will be hitting the internet in January 2017, CBS Television Studios announced today. New cast of characters, who will be exploring new worlds and civilizations, based on the original Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry.

That’s right, a NEW STAR TREK SERIES. This will be the sixth Star Trek episodic series from the franchise. (The seventh series if you don’t count the animated show from 1973.) Details are few at the moment. The series could not be tied in with the J.J. Abrams movie series Star Trek (2009), Star Trek into Darkness, or Star Trek Beyond.

That means there will be NO Spock or Kirk, Picard, or Riker.

This gives creative freedom to the writers to make memorable characters from a fresh slate with stories that the audience won’t expect. The series is produced by Alex Kurtzman and CBC Televisions Studios.

It’s hard to say what the style of the show will be like. Today’s audiences who enjoy shows like Game of Thrones,  The Walking Dead, Sense8, and Daredevil expect a high quality depth of storytelling. How the new Star Trek fits into the current TV audience remains to be seen.

The new series will be exclusive to CBS All Access for U.S. audiences at $5.99 per month.

“There is no better time to give ‘Star Trek’ fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”
