ANIMATION | RIP STUDIO GHIBLI

Well, that’s unfortunate. Reports are coming in that famed Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli has closed it’s doors, effectively shutting down their operations, including their feature film department.

Basically, the creative artists, animators and production department will be shown the door, while a small team of marketing/licensing will be ‘running’ the business.

When Co-founder Hayao Miyazaki finally retired,  animation fans questioned  whether the studio would be able stay creative, or stay afloat.

Traditional animation and unique vivid storytelling was a staple of Studio Ghibli. Unfortunately, that artistry is a rare breed and costly in a world with changing tastes in animation content.

Studio Ghibli has inspired everyone from Disney animators to global audiences. Pixar’s John Lasseter an outspoken Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli fanboy, helped to bring Spirited Away (and the entire library of Studio Ghibli) to North American audiences under Disney.  Pixar animators also studied the work of Studio Ghibli for inspiration in their own productions.

It’s a shame Disney Pixar, or Lasseter himself couldn’t somehow step in to preserve Studio Ghibli.
