OFFICIAL REVEAL

Today at IFA 2013 tech show in Berlin, Samsung revealed their much rumored smartwatch,  the Samsung Galaxy Gear. The accessory boasts a 1.9-megapixel camera on the wrist strap, the ability to make calls, receive notifications, and use apps, all the while syncing with the Samsung smartphone in your pocket.

At $299 going on sale in late September and October (US and Japan), the stainless steel gadget might be off-putting to some, but it has the potential to catch on for those consumers who are already in Samsung’s product ecosystem.  Yes, you must have a Samsung smartphone, or tablet in order to use the Galaxy Gear, as it’s not supported by other products.

The design is reminiscent of an iPod Nano, but with straps. Perhaps in future iterations we’ll see a more futuristic design with fancy curved glass that was previously on the rumor mill, but for now, the Gear might not be for everyone.

In lieu of the official video from Samsung Mobile Unpacked Episode 2 IFA 2013, having gone ‘Private’ on YouTube, here are some hands-on videos from around the web.
